Christmas Day - 2012

Christmas Day was quiet around the Downing home this year. All of the kids had other committments so Betsey and I were on our own.. We delivered meals from the community Christmas Dinner at the Methodist Church to shut-ins who couldn't make it to the church. Nothing can make one appreciate one's blessings more than seeing how tough life is for many in our communities. We drive by their houses almost daily and have no idea what life is like inside them. Some live alone after having lost a spouse of many years. Some live with an aged and infirm spouse or a handicapped adult child who cannot function without them and who faces and uncertain future when the caretaker passes on.

But for this lucky pup the day here in the High Country turned out to be a truly spectacular day. A beautiful light snow fell sparkling through the Sun's light in the morning and gave a dusting just enough to cover the ground. Then low clouds hung around the valley most of the rest of the day. By the time 3 PM rolled around I couldn't stand it anymore and headed for the hangar for an afternoon flight!

The Upper Arkansas Valley looks beautiful from 12,500 feet above sea level. The temperature was just above zero and I had left my gloves in my pickup!
